What "test tube baby" really means
A test tube baby is a baby conceived through IVF. The name is old and a little misleading. Fertilisation happens in a small flat lab dish, not a tube.
The pregnancy itself is normal. Once the embryo is placed in the uterus, it grows the same way as any other pregnancy. The baby is born in the usual way, by normal delivery or caesarean as the obstetrician advises.
Who may need it
IVF is usually suggested when simpler treatments are unlikely to work or have not worked. Common reasons include:
- Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes
- Low sperm count or poor sperm movement
- Low egg reserve or older age of the woman
- Endometriosis or PCOS that has not responded to other treatment
- Several failed IUI cycles
- Unexplained infertility after tests
Not every couple needs IVF first. Some do well with medicines or IUI. Consult your doctor about what fits your reports.
The process, step by step
One IVF cycle takes roughly four to six weeks from the first visit to the pregnancy test. The main steps are below.
- TestsBlood tests for hormones and egg reserve, an ultrasound, and a semen analysis. Many can be done in your own city.
- StimulationDaily hormone injections for about 8 to 12 days help several eggs grow at once.
- MonitoringScans and blood tests every few days show how the follicles are growing.
- Trigger injectionA final injection prepares the eggs for collection about a day and a half later.
- Egg collectionA short procedure under anaesthesia. A thin needle collects eggs through the vagina, guided by ultrasound.
- FertilisationThe eggs are mixed with prepared sperm in the lab. If sperm quality is poor, ICSI may be used.
- Embryo growthThe embryos are watched in the lab for three to five days.
- Embryo transferA soft thin tube places an embryo in the uterus. It is quick and usually needs no anaesthesia.
- Pregnancy testA blood test about two weeks later shows whether pregnancy has started.
How much a test tube baby costs
A standard cycle in India usually costs ₹1,60,000 – ₹3,56,000. This includes tests, medicines, anaesthesia, egg collection, lab work and one fresh transfer.
Some couples need extras. ICSI adds ₹20,000 – ₹50,000. Embryo freezing, if there are spare embryos, adds ₹15,000 – ₹40,000. The IVF cost in India page shows every line item.
We give a written itemised estimate before treatment starts. That way you know the likely total before you commit.
Does it hurt?
Most women describe the injections as a small pinch. Some feel bloating or mild discomfort as the ovaries grow.
Egg collection is done under short anaesthesia, so you are not awake for it. Mild cramps for a day afterwards are common. The transfer feels similar to a routine internal check.
Risks to know about
IVF is widely used, but it is still a medical treatment. Your doctor will watch for these known risks:
- OHSS: ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, where the ovaries over-respond to medicines. Careful dosing and monitoring help reduce it.
- Multiple pregnancy: more likely if more than one embryo is transferred.
- Ectopic pregnancy: a pregnancy outside the uterus, which is uncommon but possible.
- Procedure risks: minor bleeding or infection after egg collection, which are rare.
What decides whether it works
No clinic can promise a result. Chances depend mainly on age, egg reserve, sperm quality and embryo quality.
After your tests, the doctor explains realistic chances for your case. Some couples conceive in the first cycle, while others need a frozen transfer or another cycle.
Common myths
- "The baby is made in a tube." Only fertilisation and the first few days happen in the lab.
- "You must stay in bed after transfer." Normal light activity is usually fine. Follow your doctor's advice.
- "Test tube babies are less healthy." The pregnancy is cared for like any other pregnancy.
Getting started from another city
Treatment happens at our Delhi clinic, but the first steps can start at home. You can share old reports on WhatsApp, get tests done locally and plan travel only for the key days.
The treatment is planned by Dr. Sunita Singh Rathore, who reviews your reports before your first visit.
Words you will hear during treatment
Clinics use many short forms. Knowing a few makes the first visit far less confusing.
| Term | Plain meaning |
|---|---|
| AMH | A blood test that estimates how many eggs remain |
| Follicle | A small fluid sac in the ovary that holds an egg |
| OPU | Ovum pick-up, another name for egg collection |
| ICSI | Injecting one sperm into each egg in the lab |
| Blastocyst | An embryo grown for about five days |
| ET | Embryo transfer into the uterus |
| FET | Frozen embryo transfer in a later cycle |
| Beta hCG | The blood test that confirms pregnancy |
What to bring to the first visit
- All earlier fertility reports, scans and prescriptions
- Records of any surgery, IUI or earlier IVF
- A recent semen analysis, if done
- Photo identity proof for both partners
- A list of your questions, including cost and travel dates
Both partners should attend if possible. Several consent forms need both signatures before treatment begins.
